Kidney & Ureteric Stone Treatment in Oxford
Kidney and ureteric stones can cause some of the most severe pain a person can experience, and even stones that are not causing pain can lead to infection or kidney damage if left untreated. At OX Urology, Mr Sarp Keskin, an expert stone surgeon and endourologist, provides fast, private, consultant-led stone care.
When to seek help
Severe pain in the side, back or groin, often coming in waves
Blood in the urine
A stone found on a scan that needs a plan
Repeated stones, or a family history of stones
A stent in place that needs definitive treatment
If you have pain with fever, shivering or vomiting, please go to A&E or call 111 straight away.
Fast diagnosis
Most stones are confirmed with a low-dose CT scan. Mr Keskin will review your imaging with you, explain the size and position of the stone, and recommend the best plan, which can usually be arranged within a short period.
Treatment options
Watchful waiting and medication – many small stones pass on their own with the right support
Ureteroscopy and laser stone surgery – a thin telescope is passed through the natural passage and the stone is broken up with a laser; no cuts, usually a day case
Shockwave lithotripsy (ESWL) – shockwaves from outside the body break the stone into small pieces
PCNL (keyhole kidney stone surgery) – for large or complex kidney stones
Preventing stones from coming back
Around half of people who have one stone will have another. We offer stone analysis and metabolic assessment, with clear diet and fluid advice tailored to you, to reduce your risk.
