Is prostate enlargement the same as prostate cancer?

The prostate is an organ present in all men from birth. Its function is to produce a fluid that nourishes sperm cells. Enlargement of the prostate is not a disease. If the prostate causes a narrowing of the urinary tract or if it grows uncontrollably, it is considered a disease and treated. Prostate enlargement is a benign condition. It is unlikely to spread to other tissues or organs. It can be treated with medication or surgery. Prostate cancer, however, is a completely different condition. It is the uncontrolled growth of the cells in the prostate and the possibility of spreading to other organs or tissues. Prostate cancer is the most common of all male cancers worldwide. While it is a type of cancer, prostate cancer is currently quite treatable, and early diagnosis is crucial. Therefore, those with a family history of prostate cancer should see a urologist annually starting at age 35, and those without at age 45.
