When should prostate disease be operated on?
To decide whether prostate enlargement requires surgery, it must first be determined whether it is benign or malignant. For benign prostatic hyperplasia, medication should be tried before surgery. Most patients can live their lives with medication without the need for surgery. In malignant prostate disease, if the disease is believed to have not spread beyond the prostate and the patient's general condition permits, surgery is performed without further treatment or delay.
